Mike Beck LCSW psychotherapist in New York for artists, musicians, performers, creatives

Mike Beck, LCSW

In order for therapy to have any chance of helping, you first have to feel completely safe and understood.  With that in mind, Mike approaches his practice with empathy and a sense of humor, always aiming to foster a warm, secure connection from which real introspection and growth can begin.  From his own lived experience, Mike knows that earnestly excavating the deepest nooks and crannies of one’s psyche is the hardest possible work a person can do; he will help by giving you a space comfortable enough for experimentation, yet challenging enough to bring about real change.

Mike has a Bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music, a Master’s from the NYU Silver School of Social Work, and post-graduate psychoanalytic training at the Washington Square Institute for Psychotherapy and Mental Health and The National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP).  He has also trained in mindfulness-based and somatic therapy techniques at The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP).  In addition to his role as founder and clinical supervisor at Refuge Psychotherapy, he supervises clinicians in training at NIP.  His treatment style encompasses psychodynamic, relational, attachment-based, and trauma-informed approaches.  Having transitioned into the mental health field after a long career as a performer and music producer, Mike is finely attuned to the unique struggles of life in the arts.
